Families in Khartoum Face Dire Struggles Amid War and Rising Inflation

Khartoum Faces Rising Economic Challenges Amid Ongoing Conflict

Khartoum, Sudan – Rasha Abdelaziz Musa, a diligent tea vendor, dedicates seven hours each day to her work. Yet, as her day concludes at 10 PM, the uncertainty of providing for her four children weighs heavily upon her. The soaring food prices in the Sudanese capital have strained her ability to meet her family’s basic needs.

At the heart of Musa’s struggles lies her husband’s deployment in the Sudanese military, a commitment she has supported for over eight months amid the ongoing conflict between governmental forces and the Rapid Support Forces. With no communication from him and no financial support, Musa has taken it upon herself to ensure her children’s education across various school levels, from kindergarten to secondary school. The daily cost to feed her family has risen significantly, now averaging 40,000 Sudanese pounds (approximately at the parallel-market exchange rate) just for food, excluding rent and other essential expenses.

Musa’s daily meals often feature ful medames, a nutritious dish comprised of stewed fava beans, or occasionally falafel sandwiches when other staples become unaffordable. The frequent fluctuations in prices result in Musa frequently ending her day in debt to local merchants.

Musa’s experience reflects a broader trend affecting many families in Khartoum. For instance, Ahmed Youssef, 61, supports a family of 12 through a combination of butchery and livestock intermediary work. With daily expenses exceeding 100,000 Sudanese pounds (), his earnings have become insufficient. Similarly, Ali Fadil, who feeds a family of 10, contends with inconsistent income, often having to choose between meals and other vital bills.

The tenuous economic situation has been further exacerbated by significant increases in food prices, which have surged sharply in recent weeks. A survey of local markets revealed that staples such as sugar, cooking oil, bread, and lentils have all seen substantial price hikes. The Sudanese pound continues to weaken against international currencies, making it even more challenging for families to budget effectively.

Recent statistics from Sudan’s Central Bureau of Statistics indicate a dramatic rise in living costs, particularly in urban areas where inflation for food and beverages has soared nearly 37% from the previous year. In Khartoum specifically, food prices are reported to be almost 60% higher than last year. Urban residents are affected more severely than those in rural areas, with costs rising at an alarming rate due to the ongoing strife.

The war has undeniably disrupted livelihoods and supply chains. The World Bank estimates that Sudan’s economy contracted by an astonishing 29% in 2023, coupled with another anticipated decline of 14% in 2024. With millions displaced due to conflict, the urgency for sustainable solutions and humanitarian assistance has never been clearer.

Economic analyst Khalid Teks emphasizes that the current economic difficulties had been brewing long before the recent violence escalated. Factors such as reduced oil production following South Sudan’s independence, currency devaluation, and political instability had already placed stress on the economy. Teks proposes a multi-faceted approach to recovery, which includes enhancing humanitarian access and providing targeted financial support to vulnerable families and small enterprises.

Amid these hardships, the resilience of Sudanese families endures. Their will to adapt and endure showcases a remarkable capacity for perseverance in the face of adversity. A collaborative effort towards reform and recovery stands as a beacon of hope for a nation striving to reclaim stability and prosperity.
