PRWire: Hillcrest High School student Alexander Ur has developed a web-based study tool that helps South Carolina teens prepare through personalized assessments and lessons.

Hillcrest High School student Alexander Ur has created DriveAware, a free, web-based application designed to help South Carolina teenagers study for their learner’s permit tests.

Inspired by classmates who struggled with the exam, Ur developed a platform that identifies gaps in students’ knowledge and directs them toward relevant lessons. According to SC Biz, a pilot program is underway at the Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center.

Personalized Lessons for South Carolina Learners

Students begin with a 20-question preliminary assessment. Their results guide them to study materials across 12 chapters, allowing them to concentrate on topics they have yet to master.

DriveAware’s content draws on official resources from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and the South Carolina legislature. Ur told SC Biz that he regularly reviews the material for changes to state driving laws and requirements.

Quizzes and a final practice examination help students assess their progress. The platform is a study resource; completing its assessments does not confer a learner’s permit.

A Student Project Built Through Independent Learning

Ur developed his programming skills using YouTube tutorials and Harvard’s CS50: Introduction to Computer Science. He also studied Swift, the programming language created by Apple.

The initial development phase took approximately three months. After producing a working application, he shifted to a web-based format to make the resource easier for schools and community organizations to introduce.

The experience also revealed that developing software was only part of the challenge. Bringing it to students required conversations about institutional requirements, privacy and liability.

Youth Center Pilot Supports Early Adoption

SC Biz reported that Ur approached private driving schools and Greenville County schools about potential adoption. Those discussions raised questions about recommending an independent learning tool and addressing student privacy and liability.

While he works through those issues, the pilot at the Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center offers an initial opportunity to introduce DriveAware to young learners.

The center’s educational support and mentoring activities make it a relevant setting for teenagers already preparing for their permits, as well as those approaching driving age.

Plans to Expand Beyond South Carolina

Ur hopes to see DriveAware introduced in high schools across South Carolina. His longer-term plans include expanding to other states with learning material tailored to their respective requirements.

He is also interested in developing interactive study tools for Advanced Placement courses, SAT and ACT preparation, and state-specific examinations.

The project reflects his broader interest in making educational resources more accessible and helping students focus their study time where it is most needed.
