Pakistan’s fast bowler Haris Rauf has recently been subject to disciplinary measures following his conduct during a One-Day International (ODI) match against England. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Rauf has been reprimanded and fined 20 percent of his match fee for actions deemed contrary to the spirit of the game. This incident occurred during a high-stakes match in which Pakistan emerged victorious by a narrow margin of one wicket, bolstered by an impressive performance from batsman Shadab Khan.
As per the ICC’s ruling, Rauf violated Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically Article 2.2, which addresses conduct that goes against the principles of the sport. The events leading to this penalty unfolded at the conclusion of the 46th over of Pakistan’s innings, when Rauf contested a wide call at the non-striker’s end and subsequently engaged in a disagreement with England all-rounder Will Jacks. In spite of receiving a warning from umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, Rauf persisted in the altercation and continued to express his discontent, which led to the imposition of a demerit point onto his disciplinary record. This addition brings Rauf’s total to five demerit points, marking his third infraction in the past two years.
In related news, England’s team faced their own reprimand, incurring a 15 percent fine on their match fee for an overs over-rate violation, as they fell short of the required overs despite time allowances. The ICC enforces strict penalties, with players incurred a deduction of 5 percent for every over bowled beyond the allotted time as stipulated in Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct.
Both Rauf and England captain Harry Brook acknowledged their respective infractions and accepted the sanctions proposed by Jeff Crowe, a representative from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charges regarding this conduct were brought forth by on-field officials including umpires Rashid Riaz and Sharfuddoula, as well as third and fourth umpires Wayne Knights and Nassir Hussain.
Following this match, Pakistan has advanced to the finals of the ongoing series, while England must regroup and face Sri Lanka on Thursday to revitalize their chances of making it to the final. As the tournament progresses, the competitive spirit exhibited by both sides will undoubtedly contribute to the growing excitement surrounding international cricket.
