Sanchez Accuses Russia and Israel of Spreading Disinformation During Ceuta Crisis

NewsSanchez Accuses Russia and Israel of Spreading Disinformation During Ceuta Crisis

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has brought attention to issues of misinformation and disinformation related to the mass influx of migrants into Ceuta last month, specifically citing findings from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the foreign policy arm of the European Union. According to Sanchez, the situation has been exacerbated by certain external actors, particularly highlighting Russia and Israel’s involvement in spreading misleading information during this period.

Sanchez stated in an interview with Cadena Ser radio that following events on July 30 and 31, various rumors began circulating on social media platforms, linking these narratives to interests associated with both Russia and Israel, as well as certain ultra-right groups. These elements have been known to exploit migration issues to foster divisions within Spain and across Europe. Sanchez emphasized that the crisis had been seized upon by these countries as an opportunity to criticize the Spanish government, particularly in light of disagreements regarding their respective positions on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The onset of this migrant crisis saw more than 70,000 individuals crossing from Morocco to the Spanish enclave within a matter of days, prompting a heightened alert across Europe. While the majority of those who arrived returned swiftly to Morocco, a significant number have chosen to remain, finding themselves in precarious living situations, including on the streets of Ceuta.

Sanchez has notably refrained from attributing any fault to Moroccan authorities regarding this situation. He stated that no intelligence agencies that typically cooperate with the Spanish government have suggested any involvement or complicity on the part of Morocco. He stressed the importance of fostering cooperative relations with Morocco to effectively address the complexities of this migration crisis. In a bid to alleviate the situation in Ceuta, Sanchez announced an additional allocation of 168 million euros (approximately 5 million) in aid to support local efforts.

Furthermore, Sanchez pointed out that misinformation has been rampant, notably including misleading claims made by human trafficking organizations, which suggested that individuals entering Ceuta by swimming could not be deported back to Morocco—a narrative he described as false. He reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing investigations into the circumstances around this crisis and called for a unified European approach to facilitate better management of migration challenges across the continent.

Residents of Ceuta, a small but densely populated area of about 18 square kilometers with a demographic of approximately 80,000, have expressed concerns regarding security and hygiene issues resulting from the sudden influx of migrants. Estimates by Spain’s left-leaning government suggest that between 3,500 and 7,000 migrants currently reside in Ceuta, including a number of unaccompanied minors, while local right-wing politicians claim the figure is closer to 10,000. As Europe grapples with migration challenges, the calls for solidarity and cooperation remain vital to finding long-term solutions that can uplift both host communities and migrants alike.
