Three minors were among those killed in a recent military airstrike targeting cocaine-trafficking rebels in Colombia, a tragic incident that highlights the escalating issue of child recruitment by armed groups in the region. The bombing, which took place on August 27 in the southern Guaviare department, marked the most significant military operation since President Abelardo de la Espriella assumed office earlier this month. According to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, ten individuals lost their lives in the operation, with two of the deceased being 15 years old and another at 16.

The victims were reportedly affiliated with a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a group that has long been an adversary of the Colombian government following its rejection of a peace agreement established in 2016. President de la Espriella, aligned with right-wing political ideologies and the United States, has ramped up military initiatives in the area, declaring a commitment to addressing the recruitment tactics used by these groups.

In statements made following the airstrike, de la Espriella condemned the long-standing practices of armed groups, which he accused of exploiting and recruiting minors to serve as combatants or human shields. Such actions violate International Humanitarian Law and must be addressed significantly, the President emphasized on social media.

Since De la Espriella took office, military operations have reportedly resulted in the deaths of 24 suspected rebel members. Nevertheless, these actions coincide with a concerning trend of increased child recruitment by armed groups across Colombia. A report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) published last week highlighted that over 1,500 children have been recruited into such factions since 2021, with 625 new cases recorded in 2024 alone.

Moreover, the report indicates that social media platforms have become a concerning recruitment tool. Armed groups have been utilizing these networks to reach children, often compelling them to engage in dangerous tasks, such as operating drones laden with explosives. This alarming trend suggests that algorithms on platforms, including well-known services like Meta and TikTok, may inadvertently promote content that encourages youth to join these factions.

HRW’s Americas director, Juanita Goebertus, has raised concerns that the mechanisms intended to protect children are faltering, facilitating an environment where armed groups can operate with little accountability. In response, Meta and TikTok have asserted their commitment to preventing violent content and stated that they had acted to deactivate accounts flagged by HRW.

As Colombia grapples with the complex interplay of crime, armed conflict, and the safeguarding of vulnerable populations, the country’s military strategy continues to evolve amid growing scrutiny. Addressing the issue of child recruitment remains a pressing challenge for authorities and communities alike.
