Thousands of demonstrators advocating for Palestinian rights converged in central London to express their opposition to former President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal regarding the Gaza Strip. The protest, organized by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), drew several thousand participants who marched from Whitehall to the U.S. Embassy in Nine Elms on Saturday.
The demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and displayed placards with messages such as “Hands off Gaza,” alongside assertive statements criticizing Trump’s suggestions. Signs reading “Stand up to Trump” and “Mr. Trump, Canada is not your 51st state. Gaza is not your 52nd” underscored the protestors’ demand for respect for Palestinian sovereignty and rights.
Trump’s recent remarks, proposing that the United States could assume control over the Gaza Strip to transform it into what he referred to as the “Riviera of the Middle East,” have attracted widespread condemnation around the globe. His proposal included plans for the resettlement of Palestinians with no provisions for their return, an approach deemed by many as fundamentally flawed and unjust.
Notably, Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos articulated his deep concerns regarding the feasibility and morality of such a plan. He emphasized the impracticality of deporting millions of people and pointed out the regional consequences that such actions could trigger, suggesting that neighboring countries would not accept displaced individuals, thus further complicating the situation.
The march in London marked the 24th significant pro-Palestinian demonstration in the British capital since the resurgence of conflict on October 7, 2023. Demonstrators were met with a strong police presence as they peacefully asserted their views, while a counter-demonstration titled “Stop the Hate” saw participants displaying Israeli flags.
As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues, recent figures reveal a staggering loss of life due to ongoing violence, with over 48,000 reported casualties from Israel’s responsive military actions. However, on the same day as the protest, a significant development occurred when Hamas facilitated the release of captives in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, marking a crucial moment in the fragile ceasefire negotiations.
