Tens of Thousands Evacuate as Cyclone Arnab Approaches India with Intense Fury

NewsTens of Thousands Evacuate as Cyclone Arnab Approaches India with Intense Fury

India is currently in the process of evacuating tens of thousands of individuals from its eastern coastline as Cyclone Arnab, a rapidly intensifying storm, approaches land. The cyclone, characterized as “very severe” by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), is expected to make landfall by Wednesday morning, with significant impacts anticipated in the coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

As of Monday, the cyclone was situated approximately 260 kilometers (160 miles) southeast of Visakhapatnam, the most populous city in Andhra Pradesh. IMD forecasts indicate that Cyclone Arnab will shift northwestward and strike the coast by 11:30 AM local time (06:00 GMT) on Wednesday, bringing sustained winds of 115-125 kilometers per hour (71-78 miles per hour) and gusts reaching up to 140 kilometers per hour (87 miles per hour).

The Bay of Bengal is renowned as a prime region for tropical cyclone formation, and Cyclone Arnab exemplifies the weather phenomena frequently experienced by India’s eastern coastal areas. In light of this impending storm, over 12 million individuals reside within the projected path of the cyclone, with the Andhra Pradesh disaster management authority declaring a state of alert.

By Monday night, efforts to relocate vulnerable populations were underway, with nearly 50,000 individuals moved to shelters. This initiative is part of a broader evacuation plan that aims to assist approximately 400,000 people at risk of the cyclone’s effects. Prakhar Jain, managing director of the disaster management authority, confirmed that the evacuation process is ongoing.

Additionally, regional railway services have been affected, with at least 12 trains canceled in eastern India and operations on 53 routes along the southern coast temporarily suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday. The authorities are taking robust measures to prioritize public safety during this critical period.

In Odisha, evacuation strategies have been established to move another 48,000 individuals out of harm’s way. Furthermore, officials in neighboring Nepal have issued advisories to tourists, urging them to avoid high-altitude areas due to potential heavy rains, snowfall, and avalanche risks arising from the cyclone’s effects between Thursday night and Saturday. This precautionary approach follows a previous tragic event in August, when a Himalayan flash flood resulted in approximately 1,500 fatalities.

As Cyclone Arnab approaches, the combined efforts of India’s disaster management agencies, local authorities, and community resilience are mobilizing to mitigate potential damages and safeguard lives in the affected regions.
