Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, recently announced the ambitious plan to establish a significant solar energy facility in Lebanon, aimed at alleviating the country’s pressing energy crisis. This announcement came during his visit to Beirut, where he engaged in discussions with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
The prime minister expressed his commitment to developing a comprehensive framework for cooperation in the energy sector, stating, “We have agreed to establish a comprehensive framework for cooperation in the energy sector and to present viable solutions.” Under this initiative, QatarEnergy has partnered with the French company TotalEnergies to kickstart the development of the solar power plant. This venture represents not only a commitment to clean energy but also an opportunity for substantial economic investment that will benefit both Lebanon and participating Qatari enterprises.
Prime Minister Salam emphasized that the project will be funded and implemented by the Qatari side without imposing any financial burden on the Lebanese state. This is particularly crucial given Lebanon’s current economic challenges. The state electricity company has long been a source of financial distress, accumulating around billion in debt due to a combination of an inflated workforce and obsolete infrastructure, which has resulted in erratic electricity supply—often providing only a few hours of power daily.
In a climate of solidarity, Sheikh Mohammed affirmed Qatar’s unwavering support for the Lebanese people, especially in such critical times of need. Lebanon has faced a myriad of challenges, including those exacerbated by regional conflicts. Notably, he addressed the situation in southern Lebanon, where ongoing territorial disputes continue to affect the civilian population. During discussions, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the necessity for Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territories and cease its military operations, affirming Qatar’s collaborative role with the United States to facilitate future reconstruction efforts in these affected regions.
Despite a previously brokered ceasefire, tensions remain high, as continued military actions have seen thousands of casualties and significant displacement within Lebanon. Recent figures indicate that over 4,300 lives have been lost since March, with approximately 1.2 million residents displaced at the peak of the conflict. While many have returned home since the ceasefire, reports indicate that more than 300,000 individuals remain displaced, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian efforts.
Prime Minister Salam expressed gratitude to Qatar for its steadfast support during some of Lebanon’s most challenging times, reflecting a broader regional commitment to stability and recovery. As the situation evolves, the collaborative initiatives in energy infrastructure and regional diplomacy will be vital for Lebanon’s path toward recovery and resilience.
