French authorities have instituted temporary restrictions on the disembarkation of 1,233 passengers and 514 crew members aboard a British cruise ship, the Ambition, docked in Bordeaux. This precaution follows reports of nearly 50 suspected cases of gastroenteritis, commonly known as stomach flu, among those on board.
The cruise ship, which carries mostly British and Irish nationals, as well as one French passenger, had embarked on its journey from Belfast and Liverpool before arriving in France on Tuesday evening. In a statement, the regional health authority indicated that there is currently no evidence linking this outbreak to a recent hantavirus cluster reported on a different vessel, the MV Hondius, which had made a voyage from Argentina to the Canary Islands.
Health officials are conducting medical tests to thoroughly assess the situation, emphasizing that the restrictions are a safeguard for public health. Responding to the incidents on board, Ambassador Cruise Line, the operator of the Ambition, swiftly implemented enhanced sanitation and preventative protocols to address the health concerns. As of Wednesday morning, 48 passengers and one crew member were reported to be exhibiting gastrointestinal symptoms linked to the outbreak. It was noted that these cases appear to have surged following the boarding of passengers in Liverpool last Saturday. Consequently, all planned shore excursions in Bordeaux have been canceled, with the cruise line offering full refunds to affected travelers.
The cruise line stated that disembarkation would be permitted once health authorities provide clearance. Established in 2021, Ambassador Cruise Line targets older travelers, specifically those above the age of 50, and was founded by Christian Verhounig, the former chief executive of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which faced administrative challenges in 2020.
Additionally, during the ship’s journey, a 92-year-old British passenger tragically passed away on Monday from cardiac arrest while the vessel was docked in Brest, Brittany. The Gironde prefecture has confirmed that this incident is not associated with the gastroenteritis outbreak, noting the distinct nature of both health issues.
Gastrointestinal illnesses, while relatively commonplace on cruise ships, are generally not serious but can lead to complications such as dehydration. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported several outbreaks within the cruise industry this year, including instances linked to E. coli and norovirus. Health officials remind the public that gastroenteritis is different from hantavirus, which is rarely transmissible between individuals and typically transmitted through close contact.
As the situation unfolds, authorities remain focused on ensuring the health and safety of both passengers and crew members aboard the Ambition.
