Safiya Musa's Journey: Resilience in the Face of Hardship in Jibia, Nigeria
Jibia, Katsina State, Nigeria – In the face of tragedy and displacement, Safiya Musa has found a semblance of stability through her newfound skill in handbag production. What was once a source of anguish—losing her husband and two children—has transformed into an opportunity for independence and economic survival, illustrating the resilience of individuals in crisis situations.
In 2023, armed bandits stormed the rural community of Kankara, where Safiya and her family had hoped to build a peaceful life. This small agricultural town, characterized by its close-knit community and farming families, faced an unimaginable assault. While her husband was away tending to their fields, Safiya was left to shield her youngest children, Umar and Maryam, from the chaos erupting outside. The attack left approximately 20 community members deceased and completely shattered her family’s foundation.
Following this tragic event, Safiya fled with her surviving children to Batsari—where they were initially reunited—with the hope of finding safety. However, the cycle of violence continued, leading them to seek refuge in Jibia, where they ultimately settled in a camp for displaced persons. Amid the personal tragedy, Safiya’s journey is emblematic of the broader challenges experienced by countless families in northwest Nigeria, where insecurity has disrupted lives and livelihoods for over a decade.
Determined to forge a new path, Safiya accepted a life-changing opportunity offered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Climate Security Project provides women like her, affected by conflict, with vocational training in various trades. This initiative empowers women with essential skills, enabling them to start small businesses and become self-reliant. After completing her training, Safiya transformed her newfound abilities into a source of income by creating handbags from fabric, which sustains her family.
“Before I began this work, there were days when I had to send my sons out begging for food,” Safiya reflected. “Now, I can provide for them.” This newfound agency is not only pivotal for her emotional wellbeing but also crucial for her ability to feed her children. Her story highlights an essential truth: resilience can arise from even the direst situations.
The Vibrancy of Jibia’s Markets
The Climate Security Project has successfully trained numerous women in Jibia, enabling them to access markets across the border in Niger, enhancing their economic prospects. Safiya’s success story is mirrored by others like Karima Sule, a fellow businesswoman who reported a profit of approximately monthly, which she uses to support her family.
However, the journey toward economic empowerment in a conflict-affected area is fraught with challenges. Safiya currently faces the daunting task of managing her supply chain amidst ongoing violence impacting market activities. “Whenever violence occurs, our customer base diminishes, and we suffer financially,” she lamented.
Local initiatives, such as the Community Watch Corps established by the Katsina government in 2023, aim to bolster security for communities like Jibia. While these programs are a step toward improving safety, returning home remains a complex decision for displaced families, many of whom, like Safiya, grapple with the fear of losing the independence and financial stability they have fought so hard to regain.
Looking ahead, Safiya holds hope for a better future for herself and her children, with dreams of returning home. Yet, the question of whether she can replicate her success in Jibia looms large. “I want to return home for my children to reunite with their extended family, but I fear losing everything I’ve built,” she remarked.
Safiya’s story illustrates not only the challenges of displacement and violence but also the indomitable spirit of those striving to rebuild their lives. Through education and skill development, individuals like her are making significant strides towards self-sufficiency, showcasing the potential for growth even amid adversity.
