The United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has raised concerns about this alarming regression, emphasizing the urgent need to address the underlying issues and uphold the rights of the South Sudanese people.
Yasmin Sooka, chairperson of the UN Commission on Human Rights, expressed grave concerns regarding the resurgence of violence, which has been attributed to clashes between government forces, under the leadership of President Salva Kiir, and an armed group allegedly aligned with First Vice President Riek Machar. The ongoing conflict has put a considerable strain on the fragile power-sharing agreement established in 2018, which was instrumental in ending five years of civil war. This situation has amplified fears of potential further instability, particularly in the Upper Nile state.
Sooka urged leaders to redirect their focus toward the peace process, highlighting the importance of protecting the rights of South Sudanese citizens and ensuring a seamless transition to democracy. Similarly, Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the African Union Commission, conveyed his deep concern over the escalation of hostilities and called for an immediate cessation of all violent actions.
The recent strife began with fighting in Nasir County, Upper Nile state, between the Sudanese armed forces and a group described by Human Rights Watch as an “armed youth militia.” It is unclear what sparked this confrontation, but rumors suggesting forced disarmament may have acted as a catalyst for the unrest. In response to the violence, South Sudan’s Information Minister, Michael Makuei Lueth, attributed part of the blame to the White Army, a Nuer armed group that has collaborated with Machar’s Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM/IO).
Additions to tensions arose as President Kiir ordered the arrest of several officials and military personnel associated with Machar, further escalating the situation. In a reflection of the growing discord, a UN helicopter attempting to assist soldiers in the area was attacked, resulting in the death of one crew member and injuries to others.
