Hamas Mission Remains Unfinished, Says Israel’s New Army Chief Eyal Zamir

NewsHamas Mission Remains Unfinished, Says Israel's New Army Chief Eyal Zamir

Former Tank Commander Eyal Zamir has officially taken the helm as Israel’s new military chief, stepping into the role amid an evolving situation in Gaza following a recently expired ceasefire. Zamir, a seasoned 59-year-old who previously served as the director of the defense ministry, succeeds Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, who resigned in January after acknowledging shortcomings in his command.

At a swearing-in ceremony held at military headquarters in Tel Aviv, Zamir expressed his readiness to face upcoming challenges, emphasizing that while Hamas has sustained significant losses, it remains an active threat, indicating that the mission in Gaza is ongoing. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed this sentiment, asserting that Israel is resolute in achieving its objectives in the region.

The recent cessation of hostilities in Gaza came about following the initiation of a multi-phase truce brokered by Qatar and Egypt, with the backing of the United States. This truce, which began in January, facilitated the exchange of 33 Israeli captives along with 5 Thai captives for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. However, some Israeli officials have cautioned that military engagement may resume if negotiations do not yield the return of the 59 remaining captives.

In recent developments, Israeli forces have scaled back operations in Gaza, but discussions aimed at finalizing the second phase of the truce, which includes the potential release of outstanding captives and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops, have yet to commence. While Israel has advocated for extending the initial truce until April to facilitate these discussions, Hamas maintains its position under the original agreement that calls for a definitive resolution to hostilities prior to any further releases.

Zamir’s ascent to military leadership coincides with the start of official inquiries examining lapses that contributed to the Hamas-led incursion on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the tragic loss of at least 1,139 lives and the abduction of around 250 individuals. This incident is regarded as a significant military and security challenge in Israel’s history.

In his farewell address as chief of staff, Halevi underscored the necessity for a comprehensive evaluation of the failures that preceded the October attack, advocating for the establishment of a state commission of inquiry that focuses on understanding the underlying issues rather than assigning blame.

Both Israel’s military and the Shin Bet security agency have acknowledged their lapses leading to the attack, yet Prime Minister Netanyahu has thus far resisted broader inquiries that would examine potential governmental accountability. Zamir will also need to address criticisms from international organizations, including the United Nations, regarding alleged war crimes committed during the conflict in Gaza. While Israel disputes these claims, some reservist soldiers have faced prosecution for severe treatment of detainees. Conversely, both parties are accused of committing atrocities during the conflict, highlighting the complex dynamics of accountability and governance in the ongoing struggle.

As Israel enters this critical phase with new military leadership, the focus remains on navigating the delicate landscape of regional security and diplomatic negotiations.
