The Colombian army has reported that more than 50 soldiers have been taken hostage by civilians in the mountainous southwest region of the country, an area known for its significance in cocaine production and ongoing security challenges. The first group of soldiers was seized on Saturday during a military operation in El Tambo, a municipality situated within the Micay Canyon. This region has been a focal point of tension linked to the country’s persistent security crisis. According to Colombian military authorities, a subsequent group of soldiers was surrounded on Sunday by approximately 200 local residents while attempting to reach the town of El Plateado.

The army confirmed that a total of four noncommissioned officers and 53 professional soldiers are currently held by these civilians. General Federico Alberto Mejía, who oversees military operations in the southwest, characterized the situation as a kidnapping orchestrated by rebels who have allegedly merged with local civilians. The army has suggested that these individuals may be following directives from the Central General Staff (EMC), a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that declined to participate in the peace agreement established with the government in 2016.

President Gustavo Petro, who has committed to fostering peace throughout the country, declared on social media that the urgent release of the captured soldiers is “imperative.” The left-leaning leader has been working diligently to facilitate access for Colombia’s armed forces into the Micay Canyon area. Nevertheless, the government faces ongoing difficulties in curbing violence, both in urban centers and rural regions, as various rebel factions vie for control over territories previously held by the FARC following the peace accord.

This unsettling situation has stirred anxiety among the Colombian public, reminiscent of the violent struggles of the 1980s and 1990s, marked by cartel-related violence and political killings. Peace negotiations between the FARC-EMC faction and the Colombian government collapsed last year in the wake of attacks on Indigenous communities, showcasing the fragile state of peace in the country.
