Democrats Shift Focus to Questions of Competence as Election Approaches

In a strategic pivot, the Democratic Party is utilizing concerns over age and competency as focal points in their campaign against Donald Trump, particularly as the general election approaches. Former President Barack Obama joined this effort during a recent campaign rally for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Tucson, Arizona. His remarks underscored a growing narrative among Democrats that seeks to cast doubt on Trump’s fitness for a second term in office.

“Along with his intentions, there is also a question of his competence. Have you seen him lately?” Obama queried, highlighting Trump’s lengthy speeches that frequently veer into incoherence. “I mean, he is out there, giving two, two-and-a-half hour speeches, just word salads. You have no idea what he’s talking about.” This sentiment echoes a broader Democratic strategy that has emerged since President Joe Biden, at 81 years old, suspended his re-election campaign and made way for the younger Harris, who is 59.

This transition has allowed Democrats to flip the script on age—once considered a vulnerability for their party—into a potential liability for Trump, now the oldest candidate in US presidential history. As the election nears, the Democratic narrative has intensified, particularly following incidents in which Trump appeared uncertain during public appearances and faced criticism for frequent campaign cancellations, interpreted as signs of physical exhaustion.

“If he can’t handle the rigors of the campaign trail, is he fit to do the job?” posed Harris during a rally in Michigan, another battleground state vital to the election’s outcome. Campaigning alongside prominent figures like Obama and his wife Michelle, Harris aims to galvanize voters in swing states, which are crucial for determining electoral results.

Polling indicates a tightly contested race in these regions, with Trump leading by a slim margin of two points in Arizona, where Obama spoke, and Harris holding a narrow lead of less than one point in Michigan.

The Democratic Party has also positioned Trump as a figure of concern, pointing to his attempts to challenge the integrity of the 2020 election through baseless claims of it being “rigged” against him and controversial suggestions for military actions against political adversaries. As Obama succinctly stated in Tucson, “We do not need to see what an older, loonier Donald Trump looks like with no guardrails.”
