China’s Exports Soar as AI Ignites New Demand Surge

NewsChina's Exports Soar as AI Ignites New Demand Surge

China’s exports experienced a remarkable surge of 36.3 percent in September, marking a significant rebound for the world’s second-largest economy amid ongoing challenges related to slowing growth. This increase propelled total exports to an impressive 7.18 billion, providing a vital boost as China’s economic landscape adjusts to various external pressures. The growth rate amplified from a previous gain of 25 percent in August, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs.

This uptick in export activity is noteworthy as it represents the largest monthly rise in exports since 2021, a period heavily influenced by the global COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdowns. Notably, the tech sector played a pivotal role in this export revival, with semiconductor shipments soaring by over 108 percent and the export of automatic data processing machines increasing by nearly 55 percent. These figures underscore China’s extensive capabilities in advanced technology, positioning the country favorably in the global market.

In addition, imports rose by 31 percent year-on-year, reflecting an upward trend from the 28.2 percent growth recorded in August. The balance between exports and imports resulted in a substantial trade surplus of 8.1 billion for China during the first three quarters of this year, as total exports surged to .37 trillion and imports reached .43 trillion.

China’s strongest export market remains the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with exports to the region increasing by over 52 percent in September to reach .7 billion. Exports to the European Union and the United States also saw impressive gains, rising 25.3 percent and 39.6 percent, respectively.

As China transitions away from a reliance on state-led investment and traditional export-driven growth, the focus has shifted toward cultivating new avenues for economic expansion. This shift is particularly important in the context of demographic changes, including a declining population and challenges in the real estate sector. The International Monetary Fund anticipates a growth rate of 4.5 percent in 2026, which would be the slowest growth recorded since 1990, barring the unusual circumstances of the COVID pandemic.

Economists regard the vibrant export growth as crucial for achieving China’s growth target of 4.5-5 percent for 2026, though they also warn of an imbalance in domestic economic data compared to the robust export figures. Attention will need to be directed towards rebalancing growth strategies in the medium term to meet long-term economic goals.
