Bank of America Hit with .2 Billion Fine Over Money Laundering and Sanctions Breaches

NewsBank of America Hit with .2 Billion Fine Over Money Laundering and Sanctions Breaches

The United States Treasury Department has issued a substantial penalty exceeding .21 billion against Bank of America, the country’s second-largest financial institution, emphasizing its responsibility to adhere to anti-money laundering and sanction regulations. This fine, announced on October 14, 2026, ranks as one of the largest penalties in Treasury Department history.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked that failures of this magnitude can pose serious risks to the integrity of the US financial system. The repercussions of non-compliance can transcend the operations of individual banks, potentially exposing national and international interests to illicit financing threats. His statement reinforces that no institution, regardless of size, is exempt from legal accountability.

The Treasury’s action was prompted by findings from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which identified significant lapses in Bank of America’s protocols for detecting and reporting suspicious activities, particularly in relation to national security threats, including networks associated with money laundering connected to China and issues along the southwestern border. Notably, it was reported that the bank did not timely disclose suspicious transactions amounting to over billion, reflecting inadequacies in their transaction monitoring and due diligence processes.

In addition to FinCEN’s substantial assessment, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) levied a historic fine of 0 million against the bank due to shortcomings in its compliance framework for anti-money laundering. This assessment would complement the aforementioned penalty, indicating the bank’s responsibility toward regulatory adherence.

Furthermore, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has reached an .6 million settlement concerning violations related to various sanctions, including those against Iran and Russia. The settlement involved 475 apparent violations of international sanctions and included commitments to enhance compliance through improved training and communication efforts with regulators.

In its response to these developments, Bank of America acknowledged the seriousness of financial crime compliance. The bank stated its commitment to rectifying these issues, noting significant investments in technology and personnel to bolster its defenses against financial misconduct. The institution has pledged to engage proactively with regulators to ensure enhanced compliance moving forward.

The Treasury Department’s decisive actions are indicative of an evolving regulatory landscape that aims to uphold accountability and fortify the integrity of the financial system. The focus on compliance not only impacts the institutions involved but also plays a critical role in safeguarding national interests and supporting the broader economic framework.
