NBA Shuts Down Exclusive Africa Training Academy, Leaving Young Players Disappointed

NewsNBA Shuts Down Exclusive Africa Training Academy, Leaving Young Players Disappointed

The NBA recently announced the closure of its sole elite training academy in Africa, a significant establishment that was launched in Senegal less than ten years ago. The academy was designed to nurture promising young basketball players from the continent, ultimately preparing them for opportunities in professional leagues, including those in the United States. This decision, however, has raised concerns among former employees and advocates for African basketball, who view it as a setback for the development of talent within the region.

Michel Chikwanine, the academy’s former performance and lifestyle adviser, conveyed that the announcement has dispirited young African athletes who were beginning to build their confidence. Michael Abbott, a former head of academic planning at the academy, also expressed disappointment, indicating a perceived lack of investment in the students compared to the overall business model.

Despite the closure, the NBA maintains that this decision is part of a larger strategy in global basketball development. In a recent statement, the league acknowledged that it had also closed academies in Mexico and Australia, and emphasized its commitment to African talent through other initiatives. The establishment of a new global training academy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, marks a strategic shift aimed at centralizing training resources for young players globally.

The NBA highlighted ongoing efforts to support African athletes, such as the Basketball Africa League, which has successfully completed six seasons, and its Basketball Without Borders program. Both initiatives are designed to foster talent development and provide elite training opportunities for young individuals across the continent.

Since its inception, NBA Academy Africa has positively impacted about 110 students, many of whom have progressed to elite academic institutions in the U.S. Notable alumni include Ulrich Kamka Chomche of Cameroon, who made history as the first player from the academy to be drafted into the NBA in 2024, as well as Khaman Maluach from South Sudan.

Chikwanine expressed that closing the academy would restrict opportunities for African players, particularly those who frequently navigate challenging backgrounds. He articulated the sentiment among many in Africa that global corporations often approach the continent under the guise of investment but are primarily motivated by profit. However, the NBA contends that consolidating training in Abu Dhabi will allow for enhanced exposure to professional coaching and scouting, thereby fostering opportunities for the next generation of athletes.

Troy Justice, the NBA’s senior vice president, reaffirmed the league’s commitment to developing African talent, stating that several youth development initiatives are still operational on the continent. As the NBA navigates this transition, the focus remains on fostering a thriving basketball culture in Africa.
