The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has bolstered its security presence in the Abyei region following recent clashes that have resulted in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Reports indicate that at least 26 individuals have lost their lives and 82 others have sustained injuries in intercommunal violence in this strategically located area on the border between South Sudan and Sudan.
The developments were reported on Thursday, prompting UNISFA to enhance its operations around Abyei town to ensure the safety of the local populace. This region has experienced intermittent clashes over the years, primarily related to unresolved issues associated with its status following the independence of South Sudan in 2011.
The recent violence ignited at the Amiet Common Market, where tensions escalated as a result of separate incidents involving the deaths of a Ngok Dinka man and a Misseriya man. UNISFA noted that these fatalities heightened rivalries between the two communities, which have historically coexisted but have frequently clashed over shared resources.
The Misseriya, a group of Arab pastoralists from Sudan, typically migrate into Abyei during the dry season to access essential grazing land, often leading to confrontations with the Ngok Dinka, who are the indigenous inhabitants of the region. Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shreshta of UNISFA emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating that community leaders have expressed their commitment to pursuing peaceful resolutions to the ongoing tensions.
“Our priority is to prevent further loss of life. We urge all community leaders to embrace dialogue and advance peaceful coexistence,” he remarked, highlighting the UN’s dedication to fostering stability in the region. The organization has confirmed that it is taking comprehensive measures to protect civilians and deter retaliatory actions, demonstrating its proactive approach in this complex situation.
The UNISFA, which comprises 3,000 police officers and soldiers, is mandated to safeguard the civilians caught in the crossfire of these disputes. The Abyei region is notably rich in oil resources and is jointly administered by both South Sudan and Sudan, each asserting claims over the territory. Following a peace agreement in 2018, South Sudan has largely remained stable and is preparing for its first elections since gaining independence, a significant milestone for the young nation.
