About 1,400 individuals have recently sought refuge in Djibouti from Yemen, a significant movement reported by Djibouti’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh. This surge in migration occurs amidst intensified control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait by Houthi forces, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian concerns in the region.

Dawaleh’s announcement on social media detailed that within a single day, 1,400 refugees, including women and children, arrived in the coastal city of Obock. Their perilous journey included being rescued at sea as their vessels ran out of fuel while attempting to navigate the strait, which acts as a vital maritime pathway for both refugees and migrants. Obock, situated approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Yemen’s coast, has long served as a haven for those escaping the conflict-ridden environment of Yemen.

The influx of refugees is expected to continue, as noted by Safiya Ibrahim, humanitarian response coordinator for the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The organization underlined the pressing needs of vulnerable populations, emphasizing that many refugees arriving on Djibouti’s shores are women and children who require immediate assistance and support. The IOM also reported grave concerns about the ongoing conflict in Yemen, stressing that at least 46,000 people have been displaced in recent days due to escalated fighting. IOM Director General Amy Pope remarked on the dire circumstances faced by families, who often flee multiple times in pursuit of safety.

Djibouti has developed into a critical sanctuary, hosting tens of thousands of refugees and asylum seekers, with statistics from the United Nations Refugee Agency indicating a registered population exceeding 36,000, predominantly from Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen. The Houthi forces have recently consolidated their control over crucial coastal areas, including the strategic port city of Mocha and surrounding territories along the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
