NewsVenus Williams Faces Tough Times with 13 Consecutive Losses After Cincinnati Open Departure

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams faced a challenging defeat as she lost 6-2, 6-2 to Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open, extending her singles losing streak to 13 matches. This match, held at the Lindner Tennis Center, marks a significant moment in Williams’ career as she navigates the transition in competitive play.

At the age of 46, Williams, who received a wild-card entry into the WTA 1000 event, has not clinched a singles victory since July 2025. In this latest contest, Arango, who ranks 95th in the world and is 25 years old, impressed with her performance, securing victory in just one hour and five minutes. She capitalized on early momentum, breaking Williams’ serve in the initial game and maintaining a formidable presence throughout the match, converting four out of five break points while winning 71 percent of her first-serve points.

Despite finding herself in a challenging position, Williams exhibited determination and resilience. She noted her ability to control the rallies but acknowledged the need for improvement in closing matches more effectively. “The encouraging part is that I’m controlling the shots, but I have to just get a little more consistent on that last part,” she stated after the match, reflecting on her experience and the path ahead.

Looking forward, Williams is set to continue her time in Cincinnati by partnering with her sister, Serena Williams, in the doubles category. This marks a highly anticipated return for the Williams sisters, who have not played together since the 2022 US Open. They received a wild-card entry for the doubles draw and will face opponents Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns in their opening match. Venus expressed excitement about the forthcoming challenges, stating, “I’m excited and hope that we can both go into it fresh, on our toes and ready.”

Additionally, Venus Williams has plans to participate in the mixed doubles at the US Open later this month alongside Alexander Bublik, further showcasing her enduring passion for the sport. As she continues to be a prominent figure in tennis, her dedication reflects a commitment not only to her performance but also to inspiring both current and future generations of players.
