Central Europe is experiencing an extraordinary heatwave, driving record-breaking temperatures and challenging energy and transport systems across the region. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) reported that temperatures in Slovakia soared to 42.2 degrees Celsius (108 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southern village of Dolne Plachtince on Thursday. Consequently, the nation’s only nuclear power plant is operating at approximately 80 percent of its full capacity due to dwindling water levels in the Danube, which is the second-longest river in Europe.

In neighboring Hungary, particularly in its capital city of Budapest, a new overnight temperature record was logged, with temperatures remaining high at 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 degrees Fahrenheit). This prolonged heat is impacting the country’s water levels in the Danube, leading its nuclear power plant—responsible for supplying about half of Hungary’s electricity—to operate at a mere 10 percent of its capacity, further underlining the challenges faced by the region.

Austria is also grappling with extreme temperatures, reaching an unprecedented high of 41.2 degrees Celsius (106.2 degrees Fahrenheit) on Wednesday in the village of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, located near the Slovak border. This intense heat has prompted authorities in Italy to issue heat alerts for all 27 of the country’s major cities for the first time this year. Warnings have been disseminated advising the public to avoid direct sunlight between the hours of 11 AM and 6 PM. Tragically, at least four individuals, including a 19-year-old tomato picker, have reportedly lost their lives due to the oppressive heat in recent days.

A troubling drought in Germany is exacerbating the situation, compelling several companies to resort to road transport rather than ships due to lower water levels. This shift is leading to reduced goods movement, which, in turn, has triggered price increases across various markets.

Experts caution that such extreme summer conditions may become more commonplace in Europe as global climate change progresses. Presently, the continent is warming at an unprecedented rate, experiencing changes at double the pace of the global average. The rise in temperature has been linked to thousands of excess deaths across Europe this summer, raising alarms about the adequacy of the region’s infrastructure to handle such climatic stress.

In light of these developments, the call for proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change and adapt infrastructure is more critical than ever.
