DR Congo Touches Down in the US for World Cup After Conquering Ebola Challenges!

NewsDR Congo Touches Down in the US for World Cup After Conquering Ebola Challenges!

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) national football team has successfully arrived in the United States, ready to compete in the 2026 World Cup after a necessary quarantine period in Europe due to an Ebola outbreak in their home country. The team touched down on a flight from Paris on Thursday, fulfilling US authorities’ requirement to complete a 21-day isolation period in Belgium before entering the tournament.

Head coach Sebastien Desabre expressed optimism for the DRC squad, emphasizing their desire to bring joy to their compatriots who are currently facing health challenges due to the Ebola virus. He highlighted the significance of this World Cup for the DRC, noting the long gap since their last appearance in 1974, when they participated under the name Zaire. Desabre stated, “It has been a while since the people have seen the team at the World Cup. We already had the honour of qualifying for the finals. Now, it is up to us to put up a good showing in this tournament.”

In preparation for their World Cup fixtures, the DRC team faced unexpected disruptions. A planned training camp in their home country had to be cancelled following the virus outbreak, prompting the squad to relocate to Belgium instead. Furthermore, a scheduled warm-up fixture against Chile in Spain was also scrapped amid concerns regarding the spread of Ebola. Coach Desabre affirmed the team’s resilience, stating they adapted to the unique challenges posed by the current situation, focusing on their training and maintaining competitive spirit through challenging friendly matches.

During the tournament, the DRC will be based in Houston, where they will make their World Cup debut in Group K against Portugal on June 17. They are set to continue their tournament journey with subsequent matches against Colombia on June 23 in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 28.

This World Cup marks a significant milestone for the DRC, reflecting the country’s enduring passion for football and the unity it can inspire, even amidst adversity. The collective hope is that the team’s performance will not only uplift their citizens but also showcase the resilience and talent emerging from the DRC on one of the world’s largest sporting stages.
