At least 46 individuals lost their lives and over 70 were injured due to a significant explosion in the village of Kaung Tat, located in Shan State, northeast Myanmar, close to the Chinese border. The local media and representatives from a rebel group reported on the incident, which occurred around 12:30 PM local time.

The explosion took place in an area managed by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), a prominent and influential group advocating for greater autonomy in Myanmar. This armed faction has been engaged in efforts to secure more rights and privileges for the Ta’ang ethnic community in the region.

Local news outlet The Irrawaddy indicated that of the victims, six were children, and more than 70 individuals sustained injuries. A rescue worker provided an estimate to the Shwe Phee Myay news agency, stating that 55 casualties had been reported. The blast not only claimed lives but also caused substantial damage to several homes in the vicinity, prompting an ongoing response from rescue teams striving to assist those affected.

Footage shared across social media platforms depicted the aftermath of the disaster, revealing a massive column of smoke rising from the explosion site, followed by subsequent smaller explosions. Images circulated showed buildings that were left in ruins, emphasizing the event’s tragic impact on the local community.

The TNLA confirmed via a Facebook statement that the explosives involved in the incident were intended for mining operations in the region, which is renowned for its ruby-rich deposits. While the group acknowledged the incident’s severe toll on local residents, they did not specify an exact number
