Scientists in Thailand have made a groundbreaking discovery in the field of paleontology with the identification of a new dinosaur species named “Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis.” This remarkable creature is believed to have weighed approximately 27 tonnes, comparable to the weight of nine adult elephants, and is characterized as the largest-known dinosaur from Southeast Asia. The findings have been published in the reputable journal, Scientific Reports.
Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis belongs to the sauropod lineage, renowned for their long necks and tails, small heads, and sturdy legs. The dinosaur is estimated to have measured about 27 meters (nearly 89 feet) in length. Researchers assert that it roamed the regions now known as Thailand during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 120 million years ago, making it a significant addition to the paleontological record of Southeast Asia.
Although the fossil findings did not include the head and teeth, researchers can infer its dietary habits based on similar sauropods. Thitiwoot Sethapanichsakul, a PhD student at University College London and the lead author of the study, speculates that Nagatitan was likely a bulk browser, primarily consuming large quantities of vegetation that required minimal chewing, such as conifers and potentially seed ferns.
Notably, this discovery reaffirms Southeast Asia’s rich paleontological heritage, as sauropods represent some of the largest terrestrial animals in Earth’s history. According to Sethapanichsakul, Nagatitan may weigh over 10 tonnes more than the famed Dippy the Diplodocus, previously displayed at London’s Natural History Museum.
Dubbed “the last titan,” Nagatitan is significant not just for its size but also for its timing. It was unearthed from one of the youngest rock formations in Thailand where dinosaur remains have been found, a testament to its unique place in history. The region transitioned into a shallow sea in the Cretaceous period, creating conditions that would eventually limit the existence of sauropods.
The discovery of Nagatitan adds to the 14 known named dinosaurs from Thailand, highlighting the country’s impressive contributions to our understanding of prehistoric life. Its name pays homage to Naga, a serpent-like figure from various Asian religious traditions, which is commonly depicted in Thai temples.
