Authorities Foil Drone Attack Plot Against Prime Minister: Three Arrested in Belgium

NewsAuthorities Foil Drone Attack Plot Against Prime Minister: Three Arrested in Belgium

Belgian authorities have announced the arrest of three individuals implicated in a plot to target Prime Minister Bart De Wever and other politicians using drone-mounted explosives. Federal prosecutor Ann Fransen disclosed the arrests on Thursday, framing them as part of an ongoing investigation into attempted terrorist murder and participation in activities associated with a terrorist group. The developments came to light through reports by Belgium’s public broadcaster RTBF.

Fransen indicated that there are specific elements suggesting the suspects intended to execute a jihadist-inspired plot against political figures in the country. She explained that the group had been working on constructing a drone designed to carry an explosive payload. Although the precise targets were not officially disclosed, social media communications from senior members of De Wever’s government suggested that he was in fact among those targeted.

The reported threat has elicited significant concern among government officials. Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot expressed his shock over the planned attack and extended his unwavering support to De Wever and his family. Prevot also commended the swift response of security and justice services, which is credited with averting a potentially catastrophic situation. Defence Minister Theo Francken echoed these sentiments, showcasing a united front in response to the alarming news.

According to Gazet van Antwerpen, Belgian law enforcement discovered explosives in a building located mere meters away from the Prime Minister’s residence. Among the items found were an improvised explosive device that was still in the process of being assembled, a bag of steel balls, and a 3D printer. Authorities believe these components suggest the group had advanced plans to create a drone capable of carrying an explosive payload.

The identities of the suspects have not been released, though it has been revealed that they were born in 2001, 2002, and 2007. One of the individuals has since been released, while the remaining two are expected to appear before an investigating judge. Earlier this year, five other individuals were convicted for plotting an attack against De Wever, underscoring the ongoing security challenges faced by political figures in Belgium.

The arrest and subsequent investigation highlight the vigilance of Belgian authorities in addressing terror-related threats, reflecting their commitment to maintaining public safety and national security.
