At least 18 individuals, predominantly students, have tragically lost their lives as a result of an airstrike conducted by Myanmar’s military on two private schools located in a village in western Rakhine State. The incident, reported by the Arakan Army (AA) and local media, has drawn attention to the ongoing turbulence in the region.

The AA spokesperson, Khaing Thukha, stated that the military jet targeted Pyinnyar Pan Khinn and A Myin Thit Private High School in Thayet Thapin village, with most of the deceased being students aged 17 to 18. The severity of the situation has been compounded by limited access to the area, with internet and cellphone services mostly disrupted, making independent verification challenging.

Expressing deep sorrow, the AA conveyed their condolences to the families affected by the devastating loss of innocent lives. The AA, which represents the Rakhine ethnic minority, has been engaged in efforts to attain greater autonomy from Myanmar’s central government. Since initiating their campaign in November 2023, the AA has made significant strides, having gained control over a critical regional army headquarters and a majority of Rakhine’s townships.

The violence in the region follows a broader context of unrest that erupted after the military coup on February 1, 2021, which ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The aftermath of the coup has seen civil unrest escalate into armed confrontations, drawing many into the conflict as they resist military rule. Reports indicate that security forces have been responsible for over 7,200 deaths since the coup, as they intensify their military operations against armed pro-democracy factions.

Wai Hun Aung, who oversees relief operations in Rakhine, noted that the casualties included 30 to 40 boarding students from the attacked schools. Additionally, six homes adjacent to the educational institutions sustained damage, while 21 individuals suffered injuries, including six critically harmed.

In a response that underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis, UNICEF condemned the airstrike, partaking in a broader call for recognition of the violence that has increasingly impacted children and families in Rakhine State.
