Japan has formally raised concerns with Beijing following what it has termed “near-miss” incidents involving Chinese fighter jets and Japanese maritime patrol planes in the Pacific. This incident is particularly notable as it marks the simultaneous deployment of two Chinese aircraft carriers, a development that has captured significant attention within the defense communities of both countries.

Reports from Japan’s Kyodo news agency detail how a Chinese J-15 warplane, operating from the Shandong aircraft carrier, flew alarmingly close—within approximately 45 meters (147 feet)—to a Japanese P-3C maritime surveillance aircraft. These occurrences took place over the weekend and have led to Japan expressing its serious concerns to the Chinese government. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasized the need for preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

The Japanese Defense Ministry has stated that its P-3C aircraft, which are part of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force based on Okinawa Island, were conducting surveillance missions in international waters when they encountered the Chinese warplanes. On Saturday, one J-15 warplane pursued a P-3C for nearly 40 minutes, while on Sunday, the encounters extended to 80 minutes, with the Chinese jet flying dangerously close—within 900 meters (approximately 2,952 feet)—of the Japanese aircraft.

The Japanese Defense Ministry expressed concern over these “abnormal approaches,” suggesting that they could lead to accidental collisions. Fortunately, neither the Japanese planes nor their crews sustained any damage during these encounters. Hayashi reassured the public that Japan would continue to maintain open lines of communication with China at various diplomatic levels and would persist in monitoring airspace around Japanese territories.

This incident follows a long period without similar occurrences, the last of which was reported more than a decade ago in 2014, showcasing an increase in military activities by both nations in the region.
