Capturing Joy: The Healing Power of Football in the Lives of Palestinian Children

NewsCapturing Joy: The Healing Power of Football in the Lives of Palestinian Children

Doha, Qatar — On a vibrant Saturday afternoon, a small football pitch situated within a residential compound in Qatar is bustling with anticipation as dozens of children gather for their weekly football training session. This sporting event holds a special significance as it symbolizes resilience and hope for the Palestinian families residing at this complex, who were evacuated from Gaza in the wake of intensified conflict in the region.

The compound, located on the outskirts of Qatar’s capital, Doha, is currently home to over 1,700 Palestinians, including 762 children, according to figures released by the Qatari Ministry of Interior. These evacuations commenced in the aftermath of Israeli military actions in Gaza and reached a standstill when the Rafah border was closed by Israeli forces in May.

As the children of various age groups congregate in this open area, they exhibit remarkable enthusiasm despite the typically warm and humid September weather characteristic of the region. The atmosphere becomes lively with anticipation as the coaches from the Doha-based Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) football academy arrive. Their entrance is met with joyful smiles and high-fives from the eager participants.

“For the past 11 months, our weekly training sessions have been a constant,” remarked Coach Bassam Khalil. “We’ve maintained this routine, even when faced with challenging weather conditions.” Khalil elaborated on the initial hurdles they faced in connecting with the children. “In the beginning, the children were quite aggressive on the pitch. This behavior is understandable given their experiences; they are survivors from a conflict zone.”

Through patience and empathy, Khalil and his coaching team gradually fostered a positive environment for the young athletes. He expressed satisfaction as he observed the children gradually transforming on the pitch. “It brings me joy to see them thrive and develop their skills,” he noted.

As the training session kicks off, the children are split into two teams for an exciting five-a-side match after a brief warm-up and pep talk. This weekly gathering not only promotes physical fitness but also serves as a vital outlet for emotional expression and social interaction, offering a semblance of normality amid their challenging circumstances.

The dedication shown by the coaches and the resilience displayed by the young athletes illustrate the transformative power of sports. By providing this platform, Qatar continues to play a pivotal role in supporting Palestinian families and empowering their children through the unifying spirit of football.
