Gaza’s Resilience: Discover Noor’s Unique Tent Salon Amidst the Ruins

NewsGaza's Resilience: Discover Noor's Unique Tent Salon Amidst the Ruins

Gaza City – In the heart of Gaza, Amani Dweima seeks a moment of joy in challenging times. Accompanied by her 16-year-old daughter, Aya, the pair arrives at Noor’s Salon, a quaint beauty establishment nestled beneath a blue tent. Amani, 39, wishes to have her eyebrows shaped, while Aya desires a full face of makeup for an upcoming family wedding following iftar.

“My niece’s wedding,” Amani shares with enthusiasm. “We are gathering to celebrate the bride before she is taken to her new home.”

Noor’s Salon: A Resilient Vision

Noor al-Ghamari, the salon’s founder, initiated this venture three weeks ago, driven by her passion for beauty—abandoning nursing studies to pursue her dream. Noor’s Salon has become a beacon of hope amid the challenges faced by those in Gaza. It is set up on a devastated pavement, symbolizing resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.

With a handwritten sign marking the salon’s entrance, Noor warmly greets her clients. As she prepares sugaring paste, she reflects on the incredible stories of women who have visited her salon. “Many arrive with heartbreaking tales of loss,” she notes. The act of self-care, although seemingly trivial during wartime, holds significant importance in uplifting spirits.

Amani, who was recently displaced to Deir el-Balah before returning north, recognizes the restorative power of self-care. “Taking care of myself lifts my mood, especially when I catch a glimpse of my reflection,” she confides. “Visiting a beauty salon provides a small escape from the overwhelming hardships that surround us.”

Finding Beauty Amid Adversity

Noor acknowledges that the impact of war has been particularly harsh on women in Gaza, who often face a lack of privacy and basic necessities in displacement camps. Despite these challenges, the pursuit of beauty remains vital. “Women come seeking even the simplest forms of self-care,” she explains. Noor has become a source of solace, providing care ranging from eyebrow shaping to full beauty treatments.

She recalls a poignant moment with a woman who had lost her entire family in an air raid. “The transformation in her eyes was profound,” Noor remembers, describing how her client left with tears of joy after experiencing a full treatment.

Holding onto Dreams

Noor’s aspiration for a full-fledged salon was interrupted by the onset of conflict. Despite early survival concerns, she has turned her passion into a necessity, realizing that beauty services can significantly enhance the emotional well-being of women during trying times. The connections she fosters create a communal atmosphere where women can share experiences while indulging in self-care.

With limited resources—no running water or electricity—Noor provides her services with heartfelt dedication, keeping prices accessible for her community. Her determination highlights the strength and resilience that define the women of Gaza.

Amani, while reflecting on the toll of war that has visibly aged her, brings Aya to the salon to instill in her the importance of self-care. “I want her to grow up knowing that caring for oneself is essential, no matter the circumstances,” Amani hopes.

Noor, thoughtfully applying makeup for Aya’s upcoming celebration, expresses her dream to expand her services once peace is restored. “Life is short, so it is important that women take care of themselves; it’s essential for our mental wellness,” she asserts.

As Gaza’s women navigate their realities, Noor’s salon stands as a testament to unwavering hope, communal strength, and the enduring pursuit of beauty.
