Israeli Settlers Take Over 8 Palestinian Homes in Jericho, Displacing Families

NewsIsraeli Settlers Take Over 8 Palestinian Homes in Jericho, Displacing Families

The United Nations has voiced its significant concern regarding the recent activities of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, particularly the seizure of eight Palestinian homes in the city of Jericho. As a result of this incident, numerous families have been compelled to evacuate their residences in search of safety.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, detailed that reports indicate the settlers used live ammunition during the takeover and physically assaulted Palestinian residents. Their aggressive actions prompted widespread fear among the local population, leading to the displacement of numerous families from their homes. This situation has been exacerbated by the Israeli military’s subsequent declaration of the area as a closed military zone, effectively hindering humanitarian access and assistance to those affected.

Approximately 30 Israeli settlers were involved in this operation that unfolded at Ein a-Duyuk a-Tahta on the outskirts of Jericho. Observers from the Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now reported that the settlers not only assaulted but also robbed two Israeli activists during their encroachment, as well as shot a Palestinian man in the leg. The settlers have claimed that they legally acquired the homes, although Palestinian authorities assert that the sale documents are fraudulent.

Hanan Greenwood, a representative of the settlers, expressed enthusiasm regarding the acquisition facilitated by Nachala, a right-wing Israeli organization that actively promotes the establishment of settlements in the occupied territories and advocates for Israel’s annexation of these areas. However, Hussein Hamayel, the governor of the Jericho region, countered these claims stating that the land rightfully belongs to the Palestinian Authority. He denounced the ongoing narratives propagated by the settlers as misleading and fraudulent.

The occupied West Bank remains under Israeli control in areas designated as Area C, according to the Oslo Accords established in the 1990s. It is noteworthy that Israel has maintained its occupation since 1967, with over 500,000 Israelis now residing in settlements deemed illegal under international law.

The escalation of settler violence has reached alarming levels this year, particularly in the Jericho region, where many Palestinian communities have faced displacement. Local residents have expressed unease over the continuing influx of settlers, fearing an increase in hostilities and a heavier military presence in their neighborhoods. Recent developments echo similar tensions witnessed in Hebron, where a small population of settlers resides among a significantly larger Palestinian community, resulting in ongoing friction and violence that severely restricts Palestinian freedom of movement and contributes to their displacement.

As the situation evolves, it is crucial for the international community to closely monitor and address these developments to ensure the protection of human rights for all individuals in the region.
