Unveiling the Impact: A Three-Year Snapshot of Gaza’s Struggles and Resilience

NewsUnveiling the Impact: A Three-Year Snapshot of Gaza's Struggles and Resilience

Three years have elapsed since Israel commenced its military operations in Gaza, which has profoundly affected the lives of many Palestinians. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, along with other Palestinian factions, initiated an incursion into southern Israel, resulting in the tragic loss of 1,139 lives and the abduction of approximately 240 individuals.

In retaliation, Israel escalated its military bombardment, intensifying the blockade of Gaza that has been in place for over 16 years. Despite a “ceasefire” that was announced on October 10, 2025, reports indicate that hostilities and casualties have continued unabated.

The statistics reveal a sobering picture. An alarming one in every 30 individuals in Gaza has lost their life due to the ongoing violence, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health documenting at least 74,000 fatalities, including more than 21,000 children. It is important to note that these figures represent only those deaths recorded through official channels, likely underestimating the true human cost as many remain unaccounted for beneath rubble or have gone missing.

The repercussions extend beyond fatalities. Over 175,000 individuals, approximately one out of every 13 in Gaza, have sustained injuries, with significant numbers requiring long-term rehabilitation, particularly among children. Gaza’s healthcare system, already fragile, is further strained under these circumstances, with existing facilities running perilously low on supplies.

Israel’s violations of the reported ceasefire have been consistent, with more than 1,000 Palestinians reportedly killed since its inception. Reports reveal that Israeli forces have launched attacks on Gaza nearly every day, contradicting claims that the ceasefire remains intact.

The humanitarian crisis is broadly compounded by extensive damage to healthcare infrastructure, as 94 percent of hospitals and clinics in Gaza have been affected. Many of these facilities are no longer operational, leaving countless individuals without access to crucial medical care.

In terms of water accessibility, an alarming 91 percent of households in Gaza face insecurity due to systematic strikes on water infrastructure. UN experts have indicated that much of Gaza’s water and sanitation networks have suffered damage, making access to clean water increasingly scarce.

Furthermore, the conflict has devastated residential areas, with an estimated 82 percent of structures destroyed or significantly damaged, resulting in around 1.98 million Palestinians being displaced, equating to 90 percent of Gaza’s population. The impact on education has also been catastrophic, with approximately 93 percent of schools in dire need of rebuilding, leaving over 700,000 students without formal educational opportunities.

The situation for journalists covering the conflict has been particularly perilous, with nearly 300 reporters and media workers reported killed since the start of hostilities, including 12 affiliated with Al Jazeera. Access for foreign media is heavily restricted, limiting comprehensive coverage of events on the ground.

The situation in Gaza emphasizes the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a just resolution to the ongoing conflict, as the resilience of the Palestinian people in the face of adversity remains a critical narrative in this protracted struggle.
