Two months after the emergence of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in India, its supporters have escalated their actions amidst an intense response from authorities. On the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike, educator-activist Sonam Wangchuk was forcibly removed from the CJP’s sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar observatory and taken to a hospital against his will.
Despite a notable government reaction, including the detention of activists, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has initiated his own hunger strike as protesters prepare to march toward the Indian Parliament. Their objective: to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over recent university entrance exam leaks which sparked widespread outrage, alongside calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The CJP gained considerable traction in mid-May following disparaging comments made by Chief Justice Surya Kant, who referred to unemployed youth as “cockroaches.” This remark resonated profoundly with young Indians facing unprecedented challenges, including rising unemployment and economic hardship, transforming an insult into a rallying cry.
