According to recent estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF, there are approximately 2.4 billion minors globally, with nearly 138 million—approximately one in every 17—engaged in child labor. Alarmingly, around 54 million of these children are involved in hazardous work that jeopardizes their health and safety. This statistic has garnered significant attention, particularly in light of the observance of World Day Against Child Labour.

A detailed examination of child labor reveals that while there has been a decline in the overall number of children involved in such labor, a significant proportion—two in five—continue to face the dangers of hazardous employment conditions. This often includes heavy physical labor, exposure to harmful chemicals, and environments where safety measures are either lacking or nonexistent.

Among the 54 million children working in hazardous conditions, the age distribution is concerning: 10.3 million are aged 5-11, 12.8 million are 12-14, and 30.8 million are aged 15-17. UNICEF and the ILO emphasize that such working conditions pose severe risks, including injury and long-lasting effects on mental and physical development. Many of these children also face barriers to education, which perpetuates cycles of poverty within families and communities.

Child labor is predominantly concentrated in the agricultural sector, which employs approximately 61 percent of all child laborers, equating to roughly 84 million children. These children often engage in demanding work such as carrying heavy loads, spraying pesticides, and enduring extreme weather conditions, all competing with their rights to education and a safe childhood.

In contrast, children in the service sector, including domestic work, retail, and hospitality, account for 27 percent of child labor cases, while 13 percent are involved in industrial work, including mining and construction.

Notably, sub-Saharan Africa is a focal point in the child labor crisis, with an estimated 87 million children engaged in various forms of labor. Although regions like Asia and the Pacific have made strides in reducing child labor, it remains entrenched within global supply chains. Experts assert that addressing child labor in places such as Nigeria requires more than mere enforcement; it calls for an integrated approach involving stronger child protection systems, enhanced access to quality education, and comprehensive social support for families.

This complex issue necessitates a collaborative effort involving governments, non-governmental organizations, and communities to ensure that every child is afforded the opportunity for a safe childhood and an education, breaking the cycles of poverty that threaten their futures.
