Nepal Floods Devastate: Indian Workers Who Built Hotels Are Lost in a Tragic Snap

NewsNepal Floods Devastate: Indian Workers Who Built Hotels Are Lost in a Tragic Snap

Bettiah, India – In the aftermath of the devastating flash floods that struck Syafrubesi, a market town located near the Nepal-Tibet border, the resilient spirit of its people continues to shine through. Neyaz Miya and Mehadi Hassan, both skilled workers and long-time residents of the area, found themselves at separate construction sites when nature’s fury unleashed its destruction on August 26. While Miya adjusted a kitchen handle in a half-constructed home uphill, Hassan worked on the ground floor of the Ganesh Hotel, one of many buildings that would ultimately succumb to the violent waters of the Trishuli River.

The disaster has claimed over 1,200 lives, with thousands still unaccounted for. Eyewitness accounts reveal a chaotic scene—dark clouds loomed overhead and the ground trembled violently, prompting many residents to flee. Miya recalled that on that fateful morning, he and several others dashed for safety, escaping down precarious paths as the floodwaters rapidly engulfed the town.

Miya, who has called Syafrubesi home for a decade, and Hassan, who joined him three years later, have contributed significantly to the region’s construction industry by crafting furniture and interiors for local establishments. Tragically, the morning’s events washed away not only their livelihoods but also the very hotels they had helped build, including the Red Panda and Buddha Hotel.

Reflecting on this catastrophic event from his home in Turhapatti village, India, Miya stated, “The town was gone in a blink.” He estimates that only a fraction of Syafrubesi’s population of 2,271 managed to survive the day, with many of his colleagues, who shared the same challenging journey from Bihar, tragically lost.

As the floodwaters receded, a sobering reality emerged. Survivors, including Miya and Hassan, joined together in their search for loved ones among the debris. They encountered two frightened youths—Salman and Shibu—who had been left alone when their fathers hadn’t returned from work. The days that followed were filled with uncertainty and distress, as survivors banded together and sought shelter, grappling with the loss of friends and family members.

In the ensuing days, Miya and the surviving workers took measures to reach safety, navigating their way back to Turhapatti, a village deeply familiar with the patterns of migration as residents seek work opportunities across borders. For many, including Miya and Hassan, compelling economic realities propel them to pursue livelihoods in Nepal, where wages can be more favorable compared to their homeland.

The bond shared between Nepal and Bihar is known as a roti-beti ka rishta, denoting deep ties that span generations, marked by both kinship and a shared pursuit for better livelihoods. Despite facing economic challenges, the community remains vibrant, with remittances from those who work abroad allowing families to build homes—a beacon of hope amid tragedy.

As searches for the missing continue and families prepare for traditional mourning practices, the resilience of those who survived serves as a testament to the strength and unity of communities across borders. Miya and Hassan, determined to find work once again, are shifting their focus from the hills to Nepal’s plains, embodying the spirit of perseverance in the face of adversity.
