Reports indicate that Cotabato City was placed under the Commission on Elections’ control after a shooting incident on Sunday resulted in three fatalities and 15 injuries. In another incident, an explosive device mishap caused injuries to the individual carrying it, underscoring ongoing security challenges.
Furthermore, authorities declared the town of Maluso in Basilan under the same control due to the discovery of pre-shaded ballots in 36 out of 68 precincts, which has necessitated a reprint of ballots for affected locations. The chairman of the Commission on Elections, George Garcia, expressed his commitment to addressing any attempts to disrupt the electoral process through violence or vote-buying.
Garcia highlighted the deep significance of these elections, stating that they stand on the foundation of a long struggle by the Bangsamoro people for their homeland, identity, and self-determination, reflecting their resilience amid historical adversity.
As polling stations prepare to close at 7 PM local time (11:00 GMT), this election marks the conclusion of the transition period under the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), an interim government formed in 2019 following a 2014 peace agreement. This agreement symbolizes the commitment of former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) members to demobilize their forces in exchange for greater autonomy instead of pursuing a separate Muslim state in a predominantly Catholic nation.
Since the 1970s, the struggles in this region have claimed approximately 150,000 lives.
