Kathmandu, Nepal – The political landscape of Nepal is witnessing a transformation as 35-year-old Balendra Shah, affectionately known as Balen, rallies support from a young, energetic demographic. Earlier this month, during a spirited gathering, Balen connected with his supporters, offering a heartfelt declaration of love for them, a sentiment that resonates deeply with millions of young Nepalis.
Balen, who emerged from the music scene as a rap artist in 2013, made headlines in May 2022 by winning the mayoral office of Kathmandu as an independent candidate—a significant achievement that disrupted the status quo of traditional political dominance in Nepal. Following widespread protests in September 2025 against the government of then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Balen quickly gained traction among the youth, who viewed him as an ideal candidate for leadership. However, in a strategic move, he backed former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki for the interim leadership position instead of seizing the opportunity himself.
As Nepal approaches its first election since the protests, Balen is positioning himself as a formidable candidate for prime minister. He is contesting the parliamentary elections from Jhapa-5, challenging the former prime minister who had previously been ousted, Oli. Despite the challenges of campaigning in a region known for its support of the Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), Balen is representing the centrist Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which captured a notable 10 percent of the national vote in the previous elections.
Despite some criticisms surrounding his provocative public statements and confrontational approach, Balen’s refreshing persona has captivated many Nepalese, especially younger voters. In a nation where over 40 percent of the population is under the age of 35, and where traditional politicians are often decades older, Balen symbolizes a new generation of leadership. His ability to communicate directly with the public through social media and other innovative platforms gives him an edge, enabling him to connect more dynamically with constituents.
Born in Kathmandu in 1990, Balen has always had a passion for arts and communication, often capturing the struggles of everyday Nepalis through his lyrics. His rise as a public figure has been complemented by an astute understanding of socio-political issues, adding substance to his candidacy. With an engaging style that blends charisma and authenticity, Balen has emerged as a key player in reshaping Nepali politics.
Within the context of a generation eager for change, Balen’s journey from rapper to political figure resonates with young voters who admire his courage to challenge entrenched political norms. As he continues his campaign, Balen remains dedicated to advocating for the voices of the youth, making him a pivotal figure in Nepal’s evolving political narrative.
