When the news broke on March 2 regarding the closure of all crossings into Gaza, many residents believed that the closure would be temporary, lasting no more than a couple of weeks. Amid the anticipation of Ramadan, a time traditionally marked by family gatherings and sharing meals, there was hope for a collective iftar, or breaking of the fast, filled with the company of loved ones. However, this hope yielded to a stark reality as the month unfolded, forcing families to rely on canned goods for sustenance instead of the freshly prepared meals that are customary during this holy time.
Like many others in Gaza, my family was unprepared for this new wave of hardship. With prior expectations that the border would remain open, supplies of food and essential goods had not been stored. As the days progressed following the border closure, basic commodities vanished from local markets, and prices soared. Basic items like vegetables soared to per kilogram, while sugar reached , and the cost of baby formula surged to . What was once an affordable sack of flour at skyrocketed to , and in a matter of months, it reached an astonishing 0.
The overwhelming impact of this price inflation left countless households in Gaza struggling to cope. Families, including my own, began to limit their meals to just breakfast and dinner, often shrinking each individual’s portion to make what little food they had last longer. Men, women, elderly individuals, and children found themselves queuing for hours outside bakeries and charity kitchens, each seeking a small piece of food or a few loaves of bread, sometimes their only meal of the day.
The situation worsened on March 31, when the World Food Programme announced the closure of its remaining bakeries due to flour depletion and gas shortages. This grim announcement marked a critical turning point, signaling the onset of severe food shortages in the region. Charity kitchens also began shutting down as food supplies dwindled.
In our neighborhood, my niece Dana, just eight years old, plays a brave role in these challenging times. She stands in line at the charity kitchen, waiting for her turn as though it were a game. Her joy upon receiving even a small portion of food is infectious, yet her disappointment mirrors the sadness many face when they’re turned away empty-handed.
The stark realities of this situation extend beyond hunger. Increased malnutrition has manifested in the form of illness, particularly among children. My two young nephews recently endured high fevers and flu-like symptoms, with recovery hampered by food scarcity and lack of medical supplies. As someone facing health challenges of my own, having weakened significantly after donating blood just days before the border closure, I understand all too well the toll this situation has taken on our community.
Amidst these struggles, the most heart-wrenching moments arise during conversations with children. Young Khaled dreams of meat and often asks about the food his father might be enjoying in heaven, and when it will be his turn. These poignant questions, coupled with daily scenes of desperation and famine, evoke a profound sense of helplessness.
How is it possible that the world remains silent while the plight of the Gazan people escalates? As the occupation employs various means that threaten our existence, including starvation and disease, there is a collective yearning for the world to take notice and respond with the compassion and assistance that is so desperately needed.
Through this turbulent period, the resilience of families remains an inspiring testament to the human spirit. Even in the face of challenges, there remains hope for a more profound understanding that connects us all, reminding us of our shared humanity.
