In a harrowing revelation, Libyan authorities recently discovered nearly 50 bodies from two mass graves in the southeastern desert, highlighting a tragic aspect of the ongoing migrant crisis. On Sunday, the security directorate announced that one mass grave, uncovered in a farm near Kufra, contained 19 bodies, all of which have been sent for autopsy to aid in identifying the deceased. Mohamed al-Fadeil, the head of the security chamber in Kufra, further detailed the discovery of a second grave with at least 30 additional bodies. Survivor accounts suggest that as many as 70 individuals might be buried in that particular site, with authorities continuing their search for further evidence and detection of other graves.
Local charity Al-Abreen, which provides assistance to migrants and refugees in eastern and southern Libya, reported that some of the deceased appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds, signifying the heinous circumstances preceding their burial.
