Thailand is currently experiencing a prolonged standoff with Cambodia, as the Thai government has decided to delay the transfer of 18 Cambodian soldiers captured during the recent border conflict. This decision comes in light of accusations that Cambodia violated a renewed truce agreement. The ceasefire, which took effect at noon on Saturday, was intended to hold for 72 hours before enabling the release of these soldiers. However, Bangkok contends that drone incursions by Cambodia into Thai airspace have complicated matters.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for Thailand’s Foreign Ministry, indicated that the timing of the soldiers’ handover is being reassessed due to security concerns stemming from these drone flights. “The consideration of date and time of the release depends on the security side,” he noted, emphasizing that the transfer could take place soon. The military in Thailand has accused Cambodia of breaching ceasefire terms, reporting that over 250 drones entered Thai airspace on the night of the alleged violations.
In contrast, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona stated that the situation is being diligently monitored, with no immediate reactions from the government reported yet. The soldiers had been captured amidst escalating hostilities between the two nations, which had resulted in over 100 fatalities and displaced more than half a million individuals on both sides. The truce has effectively paused 20 days of conflict; however, tensions remain high, as indicated by a recent landmine incident causing severe injury to a Thai soldier.
The ongoing border conflict has deep historical roots, with landmines being a significant provoker of violence in the region. Past truces, facilitated by external mediators such as the United States and Malaysia, had been established but subsequently broke down, leading to renewed violence.
