More than 3,300 residents in Taiwan have been evacuated as Tropical Storm Fung-Wong approaches the island, bringing with it heavy rainfall and powerful winds. According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, the storm was located approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) southwest of Taiwan on Wednesday morning, with sustained winds of 72 kilometers per hour (45 mph) and gusts potentially reaching up to 101 kilometers per hour (63 mph).
Initially classified as a super typhoon, Fung-Wong has been downgraded and is anticipated to make landfall on Wednesday evening. Following its path northeast over the island, the storm has prompted significant precautionary measures, including the closure of schools and workplaces across southern and eastern Taiwan. Furthermore, all domestic flights have been suspended in anticipation of the storm’s arrival.
The storm has already caused considerable devastation in the Philippines earlier this week, resulting in 18 fatalities attributed to severe flooding and landslides. Nevertheless, Taiwan’s weather agencies report that Fung-Wong’s intensity has diminished as it nears the island, which may lessen its overall impact.
Preceding the storm’s arrival, certain areas in Taiwan have already experienced heavy precipitation, with one community in the northern part of the island recording 783.5 mm (3 inches) of rain by Tuesday evening. Significant evacuation orders have been concentrated in Hualien County, located on Taiwan’s rugged eastern coastline. This region is particularly susceptible to landslides and seismic activity, frequently bearing the brunt of typhoons.
In Hualien, a tragic incident earlier this September involved a barrier lake overflowing, claiming the lives of at least 19 people as torrents of water surged through nearby communities. Barrier lakes, formed by a combination of rain and landslides, pose a significant threat under unstable ground conditions, necessitating vigilant observation by Taiwan’s Forestry Bureau.
As the storm approaches, heavy rain advisories remain in effect, and residents are encouraged to adhere to safety guidelines. The Taiwan Central Weather Administration expects Fung-Wong to transition out to sea by Thursday morning, providing some relief to residents who have carefully prepared for its potential impact.
