Saudi Arabia has recently expressed strong condemnation of Israel’s actions, characterizing them as indicative of “extremism and rejection of peace.” This statement emerged following Israel’s decision to obstruct a planned visit by a delegation of Arab foreign ministers to the occupied West Bank. The visit was organized with the intention of discussing Palestinian statehood and addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
At a joint news conference held in Jordan’s capital, Amman, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud voiced the sentiments of Saudi Arabia and its allies, including Jordan, Egypt, and Bahrain. He stated that Israel’s refusal to allow the delegation’s visit is a clear reflection of its unwillingness to consider serious diplomatic efforts towards a peaceful resolution. Prince Faisal emphasized that such actions only strengthen the resolve of Arab states to enhance diplomatic efforts within the international community to confront what they perceive as arrogance by the Israeli government.
Originally, the Arab delegation aimed to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah as part of an initiative to bolster Palestinian diplomatic efforts during a particularly difficult time for Gaza. However, Israel controls both the airspace and borders of the West Bank and announced its refusal to grant permission for this visit shortly before the scheduled meeting.
The statements from Saudi Arabia follow a broader trend of regional solidarity in favor of Palestinian advocacy. Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi highlighted that blocking the visit exemplifies Israel’s ongoing actions that “kill any chance of a just and comprehensive” settlement between Arab states and Israel. Furthermore, an upcoming international conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, is set to convene in New York from June 17 to 20 to discuss Palestinian statehood, showcasing a significant commitment to finding a resolution to the longstanding conflict.
