NewsRubio Celebrates Syrian Kurdish Agreement and Advocates for Inclusive Governance

The United States has expressed strong support for a recent agreement facilitating the integration of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the state institutions of Syria. This endorsement follows the announcement from the Syrian presidency and the US-backed SDF regarding a significant deal that grants the central government comprehensive authority over a semi-autonomous region governed by the SDF since 2015.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating that it represents a crucial step toward a political transition characterized by credible and non-sectarian governance. He emphasized that such a transition is essential for mitigating further conflict in the region. Rubio’s statement reflects Washington’s ongoing commitment to advocating for a stable and inclusive political landscape in Syria.

On the recent developments, Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi confirmed that they reached a consensus to merge all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria with the national administration. This integration includes vital assets such as an airport, oil, and gas fields—elements that are crucial for the region’s economic stability and development.

The timing of this agreement is particularly pivotal as Syria has experienced a resurgence of violence, especially within the Alawite minority heartland. The accord entails a ceasefire across the nation, collaboration from the SDF in counteracting pro-Assad forces, and affirms the integral role of the Kurdish people in the nation’s fabric, along with their rights to citizenship and constitutional protections.

Negotiations regarding the SDF’s role within the Syrian state have been ongoing since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad. However, progress had been impeded by perceptions that the SDF was not as focused on opposing the former regime compared to other opposition factions. The United States had previously allied with the SDF in combating the ISIS terror group, leading to the latter’s territorial defeat in 2019.

While Washington’s backing of the SDF has undoubtedly enhanced its relationship with Kurdish contingents, it has simultaneously created diplomatic challenges with Turkiye, which perceives the SDF as a faction aligned with the Kurdish nationalist Kurdistan Workers’ Party, viewed by Ankara as a terrorist organization.

This newly achieved agreement showcases a significant political shift in Syria, with the potential to nurture stability and usher in a new era of governance that fosters inclusivity.
