Putin Invites Zelenskyy to Moscow, but Kyiv Calls the Proposal ‘Unacceptable’

NewsPutin Invites Zelenskyy to Moscow, but Kyiv Calls the Proposal 'Unacceptable'

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed that he has not ruled out the possibility of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as efforts continue to establish a resolution to the protracted conflict that has persisted for over three years. During his recent visit to China, Putin indicated that if a substantial peace agreement could not be achieved, Russia would pursue its military objectives.

In discussions with the press, Putin relayed an interaction with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested a meeting between him and Zelenskyy. Putin stated, “Yes, it’s possible,” emphasizing that the value of such a meeting would depend on its effectiveness. He raised questions regarding the legitimacy of Zelenskyy and suggested elections could provide clarity in the situation.

The efforts to create dialogue have been a prominent aspect of international negotiations, including Trump’s calls for a direct confrontation between the two leaders to expedite the peace process. Despite these initiatives, there has been little advancement towards a resolution. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated Geneva as a potential venue for talks, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts to facilitate discussions.

From Kyiv, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha remarked on the status of potential negotiations, suggesting that there are viable proposals from seven countries to host a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin. He affirmed Ukraine’s readiness for such a dialogue at any moment, although he criticized Putin’s propositions as unacceptable, urging for increased international pressure to foster a serious commitment from Russia toward peace.

Putin conveyed that a resolution could still be possible if rational discussions prevailed, yet he maintained that all military objectives would need to be accomplished if negotiations failed. He highlighted the need to assess the evolving dynamics of the situation and reiterated that military means would be pursued if necessary.

On the diplomatic front, former President Trump announced plans to speak with Putin shortly. He asserted that he had not conveyed specific messages to Putin regarding the conflict, as he believed the Russian leader understands the U.S. position. Following a summit with Trump in Alaska, Putin praised U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff for accurately relaying Russia’s stance to Washington, which could signal a potential path forward if both sides find common ground.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, is expected to engage with Trump soon, where he will advocate for renewed sanctions against Russia. While in Copenhagen, he noted favorable communications from the U.S. about potential support, emphasizing the importance of international solidarity in addressing this conflict.

As this geopolitical saga unfolds, the possibility of a resolution through dialogue remains a critical focus for all parties involved. The series of diplomatic engagements, while intricate, suggests an ongoing commitment to exploring every avenue for peace.
