Prosecutors Target ‘Moonies’ Leader in Shocking Bribery Investigation in South Korea

NewsProsecutors Target ‘Moonies’ Leader in Shocking Bribery Investigation in South Korea

South Korean prosecutors have taken significant action by seeking an arrest warrant for Han Hak-ja, the leader of the Unification Church, in relation to bribery allegations connected to former first lady Kim Keon-hee. This request came shortly after Han faced questioning concerning her purported involvement in bribing Kim and conservative lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong.

The developments unfold against the backdrop of ongoing investigations involving Kim and her husband, former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Yoon’s tenure was notably marred by controversy, leading to his removal from office last year following a brief declaration of martial law, which temporarily suspended civilian governance before being overturned.

Prosecutor Park Sang-jin announced the decision to request an arrest warrant, citing a range of serious allegations against Han, including violations of political funding laws, anti-graft legislation, allegations of incitement to destroy evidence, and embezzlement. Prosecutors expressed concerns regarding Han’s potential risk of tampering with evidence, which influenced their decision to pursue the warrant.

The Unification Church has responded vigorously, labeling the investigators’ attempts to arrest Han as unfounded. Church representatives argue that Han, who has shown commitment to cooperating with the investigation despite her health issues, does not pose a flight risk or a threat to any evidence.

Founded in 1954 by Han’s late husband, the church continues to navigate a complex landscape characterized by both intrigue and resilience. While its followers have historically been met with skepticism, the church is much more than a religious entity; it has expanded into diverse sectors such as media, tourism, and food distribution. Since taking leadership in 2012, Han has overseen significant operations, which echo the Unification Church’s broad influence.

Current allegations suggest that Han may have facilitated the delivery of luxury gifts, including a high-end handbag and a diamond necklace, to Kim in 2022. This act was purportedly designed to cultivate favor with Kim’s husband at a critical time when he ascended to the presidency.

As the scandal deepens, Kim has already been arrested and indicted on separate charges related to bribery and stock market manipulation, with her legal team vehemently contesting these claims. Yoon himself is currently in custody, facing the fallout from his controversial martial law declaration and the political ramifications that ensued.

With Kweon also implicated and an arrest warrant issued for him due to similar concerns about potential evidence tampering, Han’s ongoing legal battles illustrate a turbulent chapter in South Korea’s political narrative. A Seoul court is anticipated to review the warrant request for Han in the upcoming week, as the situation continues to evolve.
