Yemen’s Houthi movement has expressed its readiness to respond militarily should Israel breach its ceasefire agreement with Hamas, a development that underscores the fragile state of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi delivered a televised address on Tuesday, emphasizing his group’s commitment to intervene if hostilities against Gaza resume. The Houthis, who maintain control over significant portions of western Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, have actively demonstrated their solidarity with the Palestinian cause throughout the turbulent conflict.

Since the onset of the current hostilities in November 2023, the Houthis have reportedly conducted more than 100 attacks targeting commercial and military assets in the Red Sea. They have also launched missiles and drones toward Israel, signaling their intention to uphold the Palestinian struggle. Although the group announced a temporary reduction in these activities following the establishment of a ceasefire arrangement between Israel and Hamas last month, ongoing violations by Israel have raised concerns about the sustainability of this fragile truce.

The ceasefire agreement, which is currently in its first phase, includes provisions for the exchange of captives, a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, and an influx of humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, the continuation of these terms remains increasingly tenuous as reports of violations increase, leading Hamas to pause the release of Israeli captives. Their decision stemmed from what they cited as Israeli non-compliance, which includes instances of violence and insufficient humanitarian access for those wounded in the conflict.

In a statement reflecting the gravity of the situation, a senior Hamas official reiterated that both parties must adhere to the ceasefire. The rising tensions have prompted significant international attention, especially following remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to annul the truce if all Israeli captives were not released by a specified deadline. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed these sentiments, hinting at a potential resumption of military operations in response to Hamas’s actions.

As this situation continues to evolve, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting over 48,000 Palestinian fatalities as the region grapples with massive infrastructure devastation and widespread displacement. It highlights the pressing need for a durable solution to the ongoing conflict, one that not only addresses the immediate hostilities but also lays the groundwork for lasting peace and stability in the region.
