Israeli forces have intensified their military operations in Gaza, reportedly killing at least 63 individuals shortly after the announcement of a 10-hour daily pause in attacks to facilitate humanitarian aid. This ceasefire, intended to alleviate the dire situation faced by civilians, was declared by the Israeli army to take effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (07:00-17:00 GMT) in specific regions, including Gaza City and Deir el-Balah. The Israeli military also announced the opening of designated corridors for the transport of food and medical supplies between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
However, reports emerged shortly after the commencement of these “humanitarian pauses” that air raids resumed, including strikes in areas labeled as safe zones by the Israeli forces. Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary confirmed this troubling development from Deir el-Balah, indicating that a bakery was among the targets hit during these renewed assaults.
The escalating violence unfolds against the backdrop of a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has incited a growing international outcry. The Ministry of Health in Gaza recently reported that hunger-related causes have led to at least 133 Palestinian deaths since October 2023, emphasizing the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance.
The World Food Programme (WFP) highlighted that approximately one-third of the population in Gaza has gone without food for days, with nearly half a million individuals suffering from conditions reminiscent of famine. The World Health Organization also raised alarms regarding the malnutrition levels among pregnant and breastfeeding women, stating that more than 20 percent are affected.
Amid these alarming statistics, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan have initiated airdrop operations to deliver vital supplies, although the ongoing violence significantly complicates these efforts. One of the aid drops reportedly resulted in injuries to several individuals in a displacement area in Gaza.
Despite clear evidence of a humanitarian disaster, Israeli officials maintain there is no famine in Gaza, while emphasizing efforts to increase humanitarian access. Nevertheless, individuals in desperate need continue to voice their experiences of severe food shortages. International entities, including the United Nations, assert that a comprehensive response is critical to mitigate starvation and prevent a catastrophic health crisis.
As diplomatic pressure mounts, leaders from various countries, including France and Australia, are increasingly vocal about the need for humanitarian support and the recognition of Palestinian statehood. French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized the necessity of not allowing further fatalities among vulnerable populations, particularly children, due to starvation, announcing plans for an upcoming conference aimed at promoting a two-state solution.
In the United States, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported progress in ongoing ceasefire negotiations, expressing optimism for a potential agreement in the near future. However, the persistent violence raises significant concerns as reports indicate that over 59,821 Palestinians have lost their lives and more than 144,000 have been injured since the conflict’s escalation began in October.
As humanitarian needs soar, a concerted international effort is essential to address the crisis facing Gaza and support the resilience of its people.
