The Bangladesh Air Force stated that the jet encountered a mechanical failure.

In response to the disaster, hundreds of students and community members gathered at the crash site, demanding accountability and transparency. Protesters called for government officials to provide an accurate account of the casualties, chanting, “Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!” Their resolve grew as they pressed for the identification of both deceased and injured individuals, as well as compensation for the affected families and stricter regulations regarding the use of older aircraft in populated areas.

Tensions escalated during the protests, leading to confrontations with police, who utilized tear gas and sound grenades to disperse crowds. Reports indicated that approximately 80 demonstrators sustained injuries amidst the unrest. Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Talebur Rahman, reported that he had no confirmed figures regarding the number of injured.

The military has confirmed the deaths of 31 individuals and noted that 165 others were admitted to hospitals following the incident. The Ministry of Health has indicated that 68 of those hospitalized are receiving treatment, with 10 in critical condition. Efforts are underway by government and military officials, in conjunction with healthcare providers, to compile a comprehensive list of victims.

Rescue operations continued through Tuesday, as workers searched through the wreckage for additional victims, while residents expressed their grief and shock at the unprecedented event. Many parents are grappling with the painful loss of their children. Abul Hossain, a grieving father, shared the heart-wrenching reality of losing his nine-year-old daughter, Nusrat Jahan Anika.

The Bangladesh Air Force praised the valor of the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammed Toukir Islam, who was navigating his first solo mission at the time of the mishap, tragically becoming one of the fatalities. In light of the incident, the military announced it would cease operations of training aircraft over populated areas.

As the nation mourns, calls for change resonate within the community, emphasizing a collective desire for enhanced safety measures in military aviation and the training processes involved.
