Former Mexican Security Chief Arrested Amid Rising Political Tensions in US-Mexico Relations

Gerardo Merida Sanchez, a former high-ranking security official in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, has been taken into custody by US authorities in connection with allegations related to the Sinaloa Cartel. Merida Sanchez, who held the position of public security secretary from September 2023 to December 2024, faces serious charges in an indictment unsealed on April 29. Alongside former Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha, he is accused of conspiring with cartel leaders to smuggle large quantities of narcotics into the United States in return for political backing and bribery.
