Hamas has recently returned the remains of an additional captive recovered in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant moment as the Palestinian group calls upon mediators and the international community to advocate for the opening of border crossings and increased humanitarian aid to the area. The Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced in a statement released late Friday that the remains were handed over without disclosing specific details regarding the recovery location.
The group identified the remains as belonging to an “occupation prisoner,” indicating that they likely pertain to an Israeli national rather than one of the diverse international captives taken by Hamas during the events of October 7, 2023. Shortly thereafter, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the receipt of the remains, which were transferred to the Red Cross for further processing.
Israel’s National Center for Forensic Medicine is set to perform a formal identification of the remains before notifying the deceased’s family. Meanwhile, the Israeli military emphasized the need for the public to respond with sensitivity during this identification process, reiterating that Hamas is expected to honor the ceasefire agreement and make the necessary efforts to return all deceased hostages.
Hamas has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to the terms of the ceasefire mediated by the United States, which includes the recovery of remains still located beneath the rubble in Gaza. The group stated that while they have returned all the bodies that could be recovered, they are in need of assistance locating those remaining trapped underground due to extensive Israeli bombardments.
Al Jazeera reported that as of now, there are still 18 bodies believed to be within Gaza, with Hamas appealing for heavy machinery and specialized teams to aid in their recovery efforts. The infrastructure in Gaza is severely compromised, limiting access to essential equipment necessary for locating the remains amid considerable debris.
What further complicates the situation is the reported lack of cooperation from Israeli authorities regarding international aid efforts. For instance, former Israeli ambassador Alon Liel highlighted the emotional weight that the return of captives’ remains holds for many Israelis, which has amplified pressure on their government.
Hamas asserted that a significant number of remains are located in tunnels or structures that were later devastated by Israeli airstrikes. The organization attributed delays in their recovery to Israeli restrictions on the importation of bulldozers and other heavy machinery into Gaza.
Two bulldozers were observed in action on Friday as Hamas commenced excavations for captives’ remains in Khan Younis, a region that has seen extensive destruction from Israeli military operations. Amid these ongoing challenges, Hamas continues to advocate for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, stressing the urgent need for reconstruction and the facilitation of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. Despite the recently agreed ceasefire, the inflow of critical assistance remains limited, and Israeli military operations continue in various parts of the Gaza Strip.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has prompted multiple calls for action from community leaders and international organizations alike. While the return of captives’ remains evokes a poignant response from many, it also emphasizes the pressing need for comprehensive efforts to mitigate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
