Flavio Bolsonaro Withdraws Controversial Proposal to ‘Price’ His 2026 Election Campaign

NewsFlavio Bolsonaro Withdraws Controversial Proposal to 'Price' His 2026 Election Campaign

Former President Jair Bolsonaro has publicly endorsed his eldest son, Flavio Bolsonaro, in his pursuit to become Brazil’s next president in the upcoming 2026 election. This endorsement reflects a continued commitment to maintain the family’s political presence despite the legal challenges that have befallen the former president.

Flavio Bolsonaro, a senator affiliated with the far-right, emphasized his determination to remain a candidate during a press conference held outside federal police headquarters in Brasilia. This location has significant meaning, as it is where his father is currently serving a 27-year sentence stemming from attempts to disrupt democratic processes in Brazil. Flavio asserted with conviction that his candidacy is “irreversible,” stating, “Now it is time to talk to people, so we can have the right people on our side.”

The younger Bolsonaro’s political journey has not been without contention. Recently, his remarks about potentially exiting the race for the right “price” raised eyebrows and sparked debate within both political circles and the media. Flavio clarified these comments in an attempt to quell concerns regarding his commitment to the campaign and depicted his focus on connecting with voters.

In September, Jair Bolsonaro was convicted by a panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court on multiple charges related to his actions during the 2022 presidential elections, including seeking to undermine the democratic rule of law. This conviction stemmed from Jair’s attempts to dispute the results of the election won by current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a candidate from the left-wing Workers’ Party who is seeking a fourth term in the 2026 elections.

Flavio’s campaign has received notable endorsements, including support from Valdemar Costa Neto, the president of the Liberal Party (PL), who affirmed that Flavio would lead the party’s electoral ticket. Additionally, he garnered backing from Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, which positioned him favorably among right-wing constituents.

Critics, particularly from Lula’s Workers’ Party, have leveraged Flavio’s recent comments to question his integrity and seriousness as a candidate. Edinho Silva, president of the Workers’ Party, underscored the improbability of someone announcing a candidacy and subsequently implying a willingness to negotiate their involvement.

Despite the challenges posed by external skepticism, Flavio Bolsonaro stood firm in his intentions on Tuesday, reaffirming his commitment to his political ambitions alongside his family’s legacy. He articulated a vision that aims for his father’s liberation and participation in future elections, declaring, “My price is Bolsonaro free and on the ballot.”

As the political landscape in Brazil continues to evolve, the Bolsonaro family’s influence remains a pivotal component of the nation’s political discourse, setting the stage for the dynamic 2026 election cycle.
